When you add a ClearEdge VPS, you can choose between a Windows server and a Linux server. Both run your automation 24/7 in the cloud and both include a Static IP. The main differences come down to familiarity, cost, and performance.
The short version
Choose Windows if you want the familiar point-and-click desktop experience you already know. Choose Linux if you want to save money and get more performance for your dollar, and you're comfortable with a lighter, more streamlined setup.
Cost: Linux is cheaper at every size
Linux servers cost noticeably less than the equivalent Windows server, tier for tier:
Small: Linux $49 vs Windows $65
Medium: Linux $59 vs Windows $99
Large: Linux $99 vs Windows $139
XL: Linux $129 vs Windows $199
XXL: Linux $179 vs Windows $279
That's a meaningful saving every month for a server doing the same job.
Speed: more power goes to your automation
Windows runs a full graphical desktop in the background, which uses up some of your CPU and memory just to keep the desktop running. Linux is lightweight and doesn't carry that overhead, so more of the server's resources go directly to your trading automation. In practice, this means a Linux server often delivers better performance per dollar than a Windows server at a similar price.
"But I've only ever used Windows..."
This is the most common concern, and it's an easy one to put to rest. You do not need to be a "Linux person" to use a ClearEdge Linux VPS. A few things worth knowing:
You connect the same way. Just like a Windows server, you reach your Linux server with one click using Open in Browser, or through a remote connection. There's nothing complicated to install.
ClearEdge is set up for you. Your server arrives ready to run your automation, so you're not configuring an operating system from scratch.
You won't be left on your own. If you ever get stuck, you can use Enable Support Access on the VPS Instances page to let the ClearEdge team help you directly. Just send the code to helpdesk and we are happy to help.
You can change your mind. If you try Linux and decide it's not for you, you can switch using Upgrade / Downgrade, so the decision isn't permanent. Just note that switching between Windows and Linux (in either direction) will reset your server's settings and change its IP, so you'll set things up fresh on the new server.
In other words, the savings and performance benefits of Linux come without the steep learning curve people often expect.
Which one is right for me?
Pick Windows if you specifically want a familiar desktop you can log into and click around in. Pick Linux if your priority is lower monthly cost and getting the most automation performance for your money, and you're happy to connect, let it run, and reach out to support if you need a hand. Both will run your automation reliably 24/7.
Ready to choose? You can select Windows or Linux using the toggle on the New Subscription page when adding a VPS. See our guide on purchasing a ClearEdge VPS for the full walkthrough.
Savings tip: If you're weighing it up, give our Linux VPS a try — they're more affordable and much faster machines, which can let you run more brokers for less of a financial burden.
